When I draw in my sketchbook, working out current drawings on the wall or thinking up new images, I sometimes fall asleep and when I wake up I still have my pen to the paper, the ink flooded out in puddles across the page. Those moments, before and after waking, are filled with images. And those images inform my sketches. There is a German word for this daydreaming: Kopfkino. In German, kopf means “head” and kino means “movie theater”. Kopfkino therefore describes a cinema in your head - a daydream. A kopfkino can start playing anytime, whether you’re at the office, in the classroom or in the middle of a dull conversation or extremely relaxed drawing thumbnails in a sketchbook. I think all artists have this state and use it because the physical act of creating can induce it, sparking an “AHA!” moment.
